MISSION

Preserve Baltimore’s Korean immigrant history through oral histories and historical markers in the city’s unofficial Koreatown (areas of Station North and Charles North), seek historic designation, and promote a more inclusive understanding of Baltimore’s history through community engagement and education.

볼티모어 한인 이민자들의 구술사를 기록하고, 비공식 한인타운이 형성되었던 스테이션 노스와 찰스 노스 지역 곳곳에 역사 표지판을 설치하여 한인 이민사를 보존 합니다. 나아가 역사문화유산 지정을 추진하고, 지역사회와의 협력 및 교육을 통해 볼티모어의 다양하고 포용적인 역사를 널리 알립니다.

A Brief History

Baltimore’s Korean American community began to take shape in the 1960s and reached its peak in the 1990s. A concentration of Korean-serving businesses and services flourished in the area now known as Charles North and the Station North Arts & Entertainment District. These included restaurants, grocery stores, accounting firms, medical offices, and social service organizations. Many of these establishments served as important gathering places that helped shape the community’s cultural and social life. Some key sites include:

  • Seoul Rice Cake Shop
The only shop in the DMV region that made fresh Korean-style rice cakes.

  • Historic Korean Senior Day Care Center where parents of local business owners would spend their days.

  • Hyundai Plaza 
A former major hub for Korean businesses and Korean community life.

  • Far East House 
The first Korean grocery store in Baltimore.

간략한 역사

볼티모어 한인 사회는 1960년대부터 형성되기 시작하여 1990년대에 전성기를 맞았습니다. 당시 한인들을 주요 고객으로 하는 상점과 각종 서비스 시설은 현재의 찰스 노스와 스테이션 노스 예술·엔터테인먼트 지구에 집중해 있었습니다. 한식당, 슈퍼마켓, 회계사 사무실, 병원, 사회복지 기관 등 다양한 사업체와 시설이 여기 자리 잡고 있었습니다. 이 공간들은 한인 이민자들의 만남과 교류의 장소였으며, 한인 사회의 문화와 공동체 생활을 형성하는 데 중요한 역할을 했습니다. 주요 사업체들은 다음과 같습니다: 

  • 서울 떡집 워싱턴 D.C., 메릴랜드, 버지니아 지역에서 유일하게 한국식 떡을 만들던 떡집

  • 역사적인 한국인 노인 주간 보호 센터 지역 한인 사업가들의 부모님들이 하루를 보내던 공간

  • 현대 플라자 한인 사업체들과 커뮤니티 활동의 중심지였던 대표적인 장소

  • 파 이스트 하우스 볼티모어 최초의 한국 식료품점

Why This Matters NOW

Baltimore’s historic “Koreatown” has been gradually fading from view in recent years. As redevelopment transforms the neighborhood and only a handful of Korean-owned businesses remain, the stories, memories, and cultural heritage of the Korean American community risk being lost.

한때 번성했던 볼티모어의 한인타운은 최근 이 지역의 재개발과 한인 업소들의 잇따른 폐업으로 그 흔적을 잃어가고 있습니다. 이와 같은 변화로 인해 이 곳에 깃든 한인 이민의 역사와 문화적 의미가 영영 사라질 위기에 놓여 있습니다.

IMPACT

This project aims to highlight and preserve the historical and cultural significance of Baltimore’s Korean American community. By bringing greater visibility to its history and contributions, the project also seeks to foster a more inclusive understanding of Baltimore’s diverse cultural heritage and strengthen recognition of AAPI communities as an integral part of the city’s history.

As we work to honor and preserve the history and cultural heritage of Baltimore’s Korean immigrant community, we also recognize that Koreatown is part of the rich and diverse history of Station North, Charles North, and Greenmount West, neighborhoods shaped by generations of communities whose stories and experiences are deeply interconnected.

Through oral histories, archival research, and community engagement, our project seeks to document and share the experiences of Korean immigrants, their contributions to Baltimore, and their relationships with neighboring communities. By bringing these stories together, we hope to deepen our understanding of Baltimore’s shared history and celebrate the diverse people and cultures that have shaped the city’s past and present.

스테이션 노스, 찰스 노스, 그린마운트 웨스트지역은 볼티모어 한인 이민자만의 역사와 문화의 공간일 뿐 아니라 풍부하고 다채로운 역사적 공간 입니다. 이 곳은 여러 세대에 걸쳐 다양한 공동체가 함께 살아 만들어 간 곳으로, 그들의 삶과 역사는 서로 깊이 연결되어 있습니다.

우리 프로젝트는 구술사 인터뷰, 문헌 및 기록 자료 조사, 지역사회와의 협력을 통해 한인 이민자들의 삶과 경험, 볼티모어에 대한 기여, 그리고 이웃 공동체와 맺어온 관계를 기록하고 널리 알리고자 합니다. 이러한 다양한 이야기를 조명함으로써 볼티모어의 역사를 더욱 깊이 이해하고, 과거부터 현재까지 이 도시를 함께 만들어 온 다양한 사람들과 문화의 가치를 되새기고자 합니다.
